Antique Full Stock Percussion Long Rifle

Antique full stock percussion long rifle. 45” octagon barrel. Caliber Unknown. Maple stocks with steel hammer and lock plate, and brass furniture. Lock is believed to be marked J & M but is almost illegible. The letters M and K are stamped atop of the barrel. The rifle features double set triggers (currently non-functioning.) The condition is fair overall. The rifle is currently nonfunctioning. The hammer does not hold in the cocked position. This could indicate damage or wear to internal parts or may just need adjusting. The maple stock has period cracks in multiple areas. Areas around the lock plate have been stabilized and repaired. The stock has also been slightly sanded. It is unknown if these repairs occurred during the period of use or after. The barrel has acquired a heavy brown patina consistent with age. The bore has not been inspected. The rear dovetailed sight has been moved forward of its original position, with the old attachment point being filled in and buffed. The gun features one decorative enhancement. A stamped piece of brass in the shape of a sun or star has been attached to the right side of the butt stock using copper tacks. It is unknown whether this adornment was added during the period of use, or when the rifle was repaired and refinished. Date of manufacture is unknown but believed to be circa 1850-1880s.
