Ditidaht Totem
This delicate and finely painted pole was probably carved for Ye Olde Curiosity Shop (YOCS) sometime between 1910 and 1920. It appears to depict an unusual seabird of some sort.
YOCS Native carvers would sometimes incorporate some of the “curiosities” sold in the shop into their carvings – other examples by the Williams family include brine shrimp and crocodiles that making appearances on their poles.
Below the top figure is a wolf and large human head. Aside from the unique top figure, this pole is stylistically a classic, early carving by a Ditidaht artist who was probably related to the Williams family. A beautiful example. Same maker as V232. 14"
