Monumental Folk Art Totem by Don Colp

Vintage monumental Folk Art totem pole by Don Colp. This monumental folk art totem pole was created by non-Indigenous carver Don Colp of Calgary, in Alberta, Canada. The pole likely dates to the mid-20th century and is carved in a manner that reflects both tiki figures and hobbyist chainsaw carving. It has a fun, folky feel to it and features an Eagle or Thunderbird, Wolf, Bear, and Diving Killer Whale. The pole is unpainted, with deep cuts delineating the forms that define the stacked figures. In post-WWII North America, totem poles were absorbed into American and Canadian pop culture, and with the opening of the West to easier car travel, become symbols of Western North America itself. Hobbyists who had an interest in Native art and culture from being boy scouts when they were younger also created these monumental poles, many of which ended up at summer camps or roadside diners in Western States and Provinces. Additional information about Colp and his life is available upon request. Please note: In compliance with the Indian Arts and Crafts Act, this pole is not Native made and is instead presented as a hobbyist work of folk art. 13'2"
