Two Grey Hills by Lucy Begay. To make this rug, Begay sheared, cleaned, combed and spun wool from her own sheep. All the colors are natural with the exception of black which is enhanced either with chemicals or natural dyes. Black, natural dye is made by combining pinion, jum, sumac and yellow ochre – charring them and then boiling them in water with the finished yarn. For years the Two Grey Hills weavings have been the absolutely best in the art form noted for exceptional quality, spinning and weaving. Lucy is from the Newcomb area of the Reservation. Early 20th Century 1900-1925. Tapestry quality. A trunk piece, never used. 41" x 58"
