Original late 19th Century hair roach from the Nez Perce Slickpoo family in Lapwai, Idaho. Porcupine hair and woven deer tail on a cotton base with rare early original mineral color of red ochre. Shows much use and patina. The Slickpoo family are an important historic family of the Nez Perce in Idaho including Paul Slickpoo (Xa-Xaats-Tuustu, also known as Grizzly Bear Above, an image from 1895 of him is in the photo library), Author Allen P. Slickpoo author of Noon Nee-Me-Poo, Sam Slickpoo (image in photo library for example), and Josiah Slickpoo who the town of Slickpoo, Idaho is named after and helped Jesuit Priest Joseph Cataldo expand his mission across Southern Idaho.
