Northwest Ceremonial Paddle

Northwest (Tlingit or Tsimshian) miniature painted paddle with apalone inlay. Minimalist design, but the shape of the head, lack of ears, and blunt nose with an extended tongue (as seen on the blade end of the paddle) combined with the circular ovoid (in the centre) and the long U-form (on the handle side of the design) indicate that this is a whale design. The unusual palette of blue and yellow gives the design a distinct look, but this was common in the early 20th Century. 3 1/2" x 23"

PERIOD: Early 20th Century

ORIGIN: Northwest Coast - Unknown, Native American

SIZE: 3 1/2" x 23"
