Northwest Coast Double Eagle Button Blanket

Northwest Coast double eagle button blanket, Central Coast of British Columbia. This older button blanket has several features that point to an origin on the Central Coast of British Columbia, most likely from the Kwakwaka’wakw or a neighboring First Nation. The first indication for this origin is the color scheme of green and red, which is more frequently seen on Kwakwaka’wakw regalia than with Northern groups, such as the Tlingit, Haida, or Tsimshian. Secondly, the more elaborate arrangement of buttons into repeating triangles and the use of different button sizes to create a pattern is more aligned with Central Coast and Kwakwaka’wakw regalia. This blanket does appear to have some age to it and to have been actively used as regalia in a cultural context. 3'10" x 5'

PERIOD: Early 20th Century

ORIGIN: Northwest Coast Coast, Native American

SIZE: 3'10" x 5'
