Salish Totem by Raymond Nahanee
Squamish/Coast Salish totem pole by Raymond Nahanee (1916-1995). Circa 1940 - 1950. This larger model pole was carved by Squamish artist Raymond Nahanee (1916-1995) for Lando’s Indian Curio Shop, which historically sold souvenirs and Native art at the corner of West Cordova and Granville Streets in Vancouver, BC.
This totem is carved in red cedar and features a Thunderbird, Bear, a Humanoid Mask or Face, and an inverted Killer Whale on a monoxylous pedestal. The pole is painted in white, green, black, yellow, red, and burgundy commercial paints and is mounted on a chamfered base with a rare Lando’s sticker on the verso, near the bottom.
Signed “Raymond Nahanee, Staamish Reserve [likely an alternate spelling of Stawamus Reserve], Squamish, BC, Canada” on the back. 23 1/2"H x 9"W x 5"D
