Smith & Wesson New Model 320 Revolving Rifle. 18" barrel. .320 S&W caliber. This is a scarce firearm. Only 977 were produced. Of that only 514 were produced with an 18" barrel.
While mechanically functioning, cosmetically, the condition is rough. The entire exterior surface of the rifle is pitted and appears to have been buffed at some point. The bore is suprisingly good with sharp lands and grooves and minor pitting throughout. The forestock is checkered wood and possibly a period replacement, the grips appear to be the original mottled red hard rubber though they are obscured by the later addition of rawhide wraps.
It is unknown when the rawhide was added but it would have been done after the firearm was buffed and cleaned up.
Serial Number 698. Manufactured circa 1880.
The Model 320 is extremely desirable by collectors, not only does it have an unusual appearance and a high quality, but it is one of the rarest production guns made by Smith & Wesson. As mentioned before, only 977 were made, numbered 1 – 977, of which 137 were exported to various countries (a dozen bound for Australia were lost when the vessel carrying them sank into the Pacific), leaving 840 to be sold in the United States.
