Tlingit Chief Shakes Raven Totem

This finely carved Tlingit model pole, by an as-yet-unidentified maker, features an Eagle over a Human figure holding some sort of implement. The Human figure’s pose and the object its holding resemble the bottom figure of the Chief Shakes Raven Totem of Wrangell, Alaska, which may be the basis of the design. This pole probably dates to the 1920s or 1930s, based on the style of carving and the gently hollowed back of the pole. 12 1/4"H.

PERIOD: Early 20th Century
